Music doesn't lie. If there is something to be changed in this world, then it can only happen through music.

¿Why Rock and Roll...in Puerto Rico?
Brief Origin of Rock and Roll by Orly Vázquez (The Telstars) aka Don Jíbaro, illustrious author of jibaros.com

Rock and Roll in Puerto Rico has been a product of direct and indirect influence from both American rock music and Latin rock music, and its fusion with other genres. Throughout history, the Rock genre had suffered ups and downs, having a significant peak in the 1960's. The late 1950's marks the introduction of the genre in Puerto Rico, with the Elvis Presley hype in the USA reaching the island. READ MORE

COLLAGE OF A FEW 1960's PUERTO RICO BANDS
(by Penny Andrea-Einmo)

Let's give accolades where they're due, because we were the first long haired ones that the kids threw rocks at, calling us... "hippie", "faggot", "patoooo", "weirdo", etc. We endured the intrinsically penetrating stares of the people when we got on the bus or we entered a place of business. It was hard... but we held our chins high because we believed we had a purpose. And guess what? Today, Rock and Roll is a MULTI TRILLION dollar business in every way, shape and form. Not bad for a bunch of "hippies" and "patos"! So here is a humble tribute. Deepest appreciation to all who have contributed to rockinpr.net and helped make it the best and most accurate source of information for Puerto Rico Rock and Roll music.

Tony Alicea
YES! I was born in the house my father built... NOT! The rest is hysteria, I mean history!...well, you know. When I was four years old, somebody gave me a toy piano and soon I started imitating tunes from the radio and TV without much effort. But I also loved to listen to the radio. READ MORE

This is a brief history of Rock and Roll in Puerto Rico, mainly focused on my participation in it since 1961.

I was then 13 years old but due to my height and appearance I looked older and had no problem going to nightclubs and integrating with the older musicians. It was at a club called the "Quiet Village" on Recinto Sur Street in Old San Juan, where I had my first 'real' experience playing Rock and R & B (Rhythm & Blues) with American musicians.

Where do I start? I guess it would be in grade school at República del Peru on la Calle Loiza where I had to go after our family moved to P.R. after 13 years living in California. It was hard being el Americano there, and I remember one of the things I looked forward to was getting off the bus from urbanización Los Angeles where we lived, and going to the little store next to school where you could get snacks. They had a juke box... READ MORE

Taino here. Talking about P.R. and what I know...my uncle was in the Navy and he used to take me to the swimming pool at the Navy base in San Juan on Saturdays, and there was where I heard American music (Rock and Roll) most of the time, or what I could hear on the am radio once in a while.

In 1966 I formed a band in my garage. The name was THE GADGETS. At the beginning the members were Alex Rodriguez (THE CHALLENGERS), Johnny, Felix Rodriguez (later with LA BANDA DEL K-RAJO), Elmo (great singer), and yours truly. Later Alex left with TheChallengers and Johnny went into the Army. READ MORE

Starting at the age of 15 I joined a series of Rock bands in Puerto Rico such as The We Know You, The Challengers, We, The Undertakers, and finally The Living End in 1965. The Living End started in 1964. READ MORE

When I go back and try to pinpoint how I gravitated to the world of music, I recall being fixed on two things: the beat and the melody. I remember, as a kid, playing my mother’s pots and pans from the kitchen. I loved the type of sound they created. And that Sultana Crackers can… What a sound!

Adrian Montijo
A transplant from the Surf Music capital of Southern California, arrived in Puerto Rico in 1963 with a Surfboard, a Silvertone guitar, and an amplifier, with only "Gringo English". Upon enrollment into La Gabriela Mistral he barely survived his unwelcome homecoming by the hands of the Los Conservativos! To preserve his existence he was handed an 8 inch knife by none other than Pedro (Pete) Rivera, another English speaking Rican, and future drummer for The Telstars (little did he know it then).
Pete carried in his back pocket drumsticks, and was always banging on the school furniture, so I convinced him to buy a drum set to bang on & a surfboard. One day at La Gabriela they were having Field Day, and at the convincing of our classmates we set up the drums and my guitar equipment and played for our classmates the few songs we had rehearsed so far, "WIPE OUT", MISERLOU, PIPELINE, TELSTAR, basically, instrumental Surf Music from California!
